With 5,000 skilled jobs hanging in the balance at Vauxhall's plants at Ellesmere Port and Luton, and the 20,000 more across the supply chain that also depend on Vauxhall, we need our government to get involved.

The Germans did not dither - they sent Chancellor Angela Merkel to the negotiating table. When a country sends its leader, complete with loan guarantees, to talks on jobs and plants, it is saying loud and clear that it expects to be in the driving seat. We need our government to do the same thing.

Gordon Brown needs to hear from you. It is up to us to make our voices heard, and persuade him that government intervention is crucial if British manufacturing is to survive the economic downturn. As the clock ticks, there are 25,000 very worried workers in this country who are praying that their government wastes not a moment longer.
